Demystifying SPF: The Truth About Sun Protection
With the arrival of summer, in the vast world of cosmetics and skincare, there is one element that is often misunderstood and underestimated: the Sun Protection Factor. Many myths surround this crucial component in protecting against sun damage, but it's time to unravel the truth behind SPF and its importance in our daily skincare routine.
At Gisèle Denis, we know that every skin type is unique. That's why choosing the right sunscreen for our skin has become an increasingly complex task. However, we are here to help you select the one that best suits your needs and to give you some tips on how to achieve healthy, tanned skin.
what is SPF and what is it used for?
SPF is an indicator of how long you can be exposed to the sun without getting sunburnt. SPF determines a sunscreen's ability to protect the skin against damage caused by the sun's UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn, photoageing and other health problems.
what is the truth about SPF?
- Full protection: Despite popular belief, higher SPF does not mean full or prolonged protection, so the most important factor is regular and proper reapplication of our cream.
- Proper application is key: Even the best SPF cannot provide protection if it is not applied correctly. It is recommended to spread a generous amount of sunscreen (about a teaspoon for the face) at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
- Sunscreen is for everyone: Regardless of skin tone, everyone needs sun protection. Darker skin phototypes have a higher amount of melanin, which gives them greater natural protection from the sun, but are still susceptible to sun damage.
- Whatever the season: SPF is essential for maintaining healthy skin, no matter what season it is, because even if the temperature is cooler in winter and the days are cloudy, the sun's ultraviolet rays can still penetrate through clouds and reflect off snow, water and other surfaces, causing damage to the skin.
what SPF should you use depending on your skin type?
- Phototype I and II: People with very fair skin or who burn easily. An SPF of at least 50+ is recommended.
- Phototype III and IV: People with tanned skin or who tan easily. An SPF of 30 to 50 is adequate, but regular reapplication is essential.
- Phototypes V and VI: People with dark or black skin. Although they have higher natural protection, they should still use an SPF of at least 15 or 30 and pay attention to exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands.
In short, SPF is an essential component of our daily skincare routine, regardless of skin tone or weather conditions. Remember: never underestimate the power of sunscreen!
